Thinning is one of the most important
intermediate steps of timber management. A professionally managed thinning will: provide
cash for trees that will die before maturity, remove inferior (crooked and diseased)
trees, stimulate the growth of remaining high quality trees, and provide a positive cash
flow.
Without professional
supervision, there is the possibility of excessive damage to remaining trees, which could
reduce growth rates and residual tree quality. There is also the possibility of improper
tree selection which may result in a lower financial return.
